The Opportunity (closing 7 Sept. 2018)

An exciting opportunity exists for a talented and motivated candidate to undertake a PhD project within an energetic environment led by a skilled supervisor who has won supervision awards. A scholarship is available for the project: Why do girls/women who had aspired to STEM careers in high school, opt out of those choices and careers? Aligned with Professor Watt’s ARC FT170100153: Gendered engagement and participation in sciences and mathematics (see: www.stepsstudy.org).

The scholarship winner would be enrolled full-time, on-campus, with office space and facilities made available at The University of Sydney. The selected candidate will develop sophisticated research skills through involvement with survey instruments, data management and coding, data analyses, and report writing. Professor Helen Watt heads the MOVE icp (Motivation, Engagement and Individual Choice Pathways) Research Network.

The scholarship is valued at Aus $26,300 per annum (tax exempt) and may be held for up to three years 2018-2020 for full-time enrollment, subject to satisfactory progress. All PhD students in the Sydney School of Education and Social Work (SSESW) can also apply for conference funding and expenses up to $2,000 per year from the School. Please note that the scholarship does not cover any tuition fees payable by international students or domestic fees by Australian students.

Candidate Requirements

The successful applicant will possess:

  1. an Australian Honours degree (Class I or Upper Class II) in Education or Psychology (or cognate discipline) or equivalent research qualification;
  2. advanced communication and writing skills;
  3. demonstrated competence in quantitative research methods and statistics.
  4. The successful applicant will also need to meet the entry requirements to enroll in a PhD at The University of Sydney.
