Postdoctoral Research Fellow in emotion regulation and media/health literacy
Job Description
The Department of Surgery at McGill University anticipates hiring a postdoctoral research fellow starting as soon as possible for one year and renewable for a second year (pending availability of funds). The position includes a full-time salary and benefits. Review of applications will start immediately and continue until the position is filled.
The postdoc will work under the supervision of Dr. Jason M. Harley who is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery, Junior Scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), Associate Member of the Institute for Health Sciences Education at McGill, and Director of the SAILS Lab. Their lab focuses on enhancing health science education by applying psychological and educational theories, interdisciplinary research methods, and leveraging advanced technologies. Dr. Harley’s research is primarily informed by theories of emotion and cognitive regulation in educational and training environments. Methodologically, Dr. Harley’s mixed-methods (quantitative and qualitative) interdisciplinary research draws on both objective (e.g., skin conductance, facial recognition software, eye tracking) and subjective (self-report instruments, semi-structured interviews) measures of emotion and cognition.
The position offers a unique postdoctoral training experience and publishing opportunities within a multi-disciplinary grant-funded project with international collaborators: Dr. Reinhard Pekrun and Dr. James Gross. The first aim of the funded project is to develop instructional multimedia about media literacy and how to regulate the emotions one experiences while trying to evaluate the credibility of health-related media messages. The second objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional resources to enhance media/health literacy and decrease the incidence of emotions that retract from critical media evaluation.
Eligibility and Requirements
- Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, Cognitive or Social Psychology, Cognitive Science, Health Sciences or an equivalent degree at the time of appointment
- Research experience in one or more of the following areas (emotions, learning, media literacy, health literacy)
- Strong writing skills and ability to conduct independent research as evidenced by first author publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Willingness to develop desired skills (see directly below)
- Experience with planning and conducting randomized control trial studies
- Experience designing, developing, and evaluating multimedia-based instructional resources
- Experience working with self-report measures of emotion
- Advanced statistical skills (e.g., HLM, SEM)
- Experience working with facial recognition software and physiological sensors (skin conductance/emotional activation)
- Experience mentoring graduate and undergraduate students
