Overview of the AERA MotSIG Program

a.       Saturday2:15-3:45 p.m.: Invited Session – “Challenging Motivation Theories: Invited Perspectives of Early Career Researchers” – Four highly productive early career scholars will share what they find most exciting and challenging about the current state of motivation research (Fani Lauermann, DeLeon Gray, Elizabeth Canning, and Carlton Fong). Lisa Linnenbrink-Garcia will serve as discussant and will guide the audience and panelists in a discussion about where our field is heading. Location: Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Room 4.11. Note that this session is concurrent with Reinhard Pekrun’s Div. C Scribner award address, which will likely be video-recorded.

b.       Saturday4:05-6:05 p.m.: Commemorative Session – “Culture, Context, and Meaning: Honoring Marty Maehr’s Contributions to the Field of Achievement Motivation”– This commemoration session brings together Marty Maehr’s students and colleagues to share and discuss his forward theoretical thinking and empirical work on the roles of culture, context, and meaning-making in motivation in educational settings. Presenters include Eric Anderman, Tim Urdan, Akane Zusho, Avi Kaplan, Dennis McInerney, and Julianne Turner. Location: Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Room 5.08.

c.       Saturday6:30-7:55 p.m.: SIG Business Meeting and Student Awards – Our annual business meeting, which precedes the social event, will be held from 6:15-7:45 p.m.(Saturday, April 14) at the Marriott Marquis hotel At this meeting, we will announce our student award winners, notable SIG activities and initiatives, and our newly-elected SIG leaders. Allan Wigfield will also offer a brief tribute to Marty Covington. If you have something to announce that would be of interest to the SIG (e.g., book, conference, other), please let me know, so that we can work that into our business meeting. ALL ARE WELCOME and encouraged to attend. This year the SIG will be forgoing catering at the SIG business meeting due to high costs in New York. Please feel free to bring a snack. Location: Marriott Marquis Hotel, Seventh Floor, Astor Ballroom (a 285-foot walk to Bowlmor Times Square, where we’ll head following).
