Mission or Goal of Unit: The Department of Foundations of Education provides multiple-disciplinary, liberal education perspectives on the foundational/core components of educational practice that serve all programs in the School of Education. The department provides an essential link between practice and theory in ways that make effective reflection, inquiry and decision-making possible. The department plays an integral role in the PhD in Education by providing foundational coursework in research methods and design, epistemology, theory and ethics. Program department faculty actively serve on dissertation committees and are engaged with doctoral student mentorship. The department also maintains the Educational Psychology and Research, Assessment and Evaluation Concentrations of the PhD program. The mission of the department is to prepare educators, practitioners, and scholars for intelligent and responsible practice of teaching, research, administration and policy-making in a variety of settings.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal: This nine-month tenure-eligible faculty position is responsible for maintaining an on-going program of research in educational psychology; having a clear potential for external funding to support research efforts; teaching undergraduate, master’s and doctoral courses and advising doctoral students in educational psychology; advising and mentoring doctoral student research; collaborating with colleagues particularly in externally funded research; participating in appropriate service activities at the department, college, university, and professional organization levels.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching
    Teach undergraduate, master’s and doctoral courses; advise and serve on dissertation committees for doctoral students in educational psychology; advise and mentor doctoral student research.
  2. Research
    Maintain an on-going program of research in educational psychology, including seeking external funding to support research efforts; collaborate with colleagues, particularly in externally funded research projects.
  3. Service
    Participate in appropriate service activities at the department, college, university and professional organization levels.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in educational psychology or closely related field;
  • Record of refereed publications; promise or record of external funding to support research;
  • An innovative and impactful research agenda that aligns with federal funding agencies; evidence of strong methodological skills; Experience teaching educational psychology or related courses at the college level;
  • Demonstrated success in working with others on research projects;
  • Experience conducting research related to or within urban settings, high-need schools, and/or underrepresented populations; and Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Record of obtaining external funding;
  • Demonstrated interest in human development in education;
  • Experience with doctoral education; experience teaching or designing online courses in educational psychology or a related field; and
  • K-12 teaching experience.
